Getting Started: Class Actions

The Committee was established by a 1992 amendment to the Law Society Act. Its function is to determine whether plaintiffs in class proceedings should receive financial support from the Class Proceedings Fund and to determine the amount of such support. Written reasons for decisions are rarely issued. The Committee occasionally issues Practice Directions.

Launched in 2017, the LCO’s class actions project is the first independent, evidence-based, and comprehensive review of class actions in Ontario since the enactment of the Class Proceedings Act in 1993.
